About 'What Mums Do'

What Mums Do is for Mums at any stage looking for some inspiration to live your best thriving life.

This was created out of a reverence for the challenges of Mothering and the beauty, joy and love encased in Mothering all rolled into one big ball of emotions and experience. We give our all and it's a very long term project where it is 'hard to see the forest through the trees' when we get caught up in each stage which feels relentless and tiring through the intense years. You will emerge changed and grown and better for all your giving. It does not last forever, there are seasons in life where Mothering looks different at each season as we rise to the occasion motivated by love.

This website comes out of my own Mothering experience of my two wonderful boys, intense love of learning, and background in health as an Occupational Therapist. Health and wellbeing are foundations of everything we do, but we also need a holistic view which integrates mind, body, spirit within the context of our environments. Mothering made me re-frame and expand my understanding of the importance of roles and occupations in the context of our social and environmental world. When we become a mother, everything changes, we have to redefine ourselves as a changed person in body and mind, learn new mother-care occupations, change our habits around our baby's routine, baby-proof our environments, learn to use baby gear, eat differently, the list goes on. It requires embrace, acceptance, respecting the process of change and self-love.

These words are meant to encourage you, for you to see the enormity of what Mothering is and know that we see you, Mother to Mother. We need to support each other, share our experiences, and be seen as the backbone of society for how we treat our Mothers and Children shapes our future as a society.

There are so many occupations rolled up into the role of mothering, it is hard to articulate exactly what mums do. Mums are the original multi-taskers, just out of necessity and certainly out of love for their families. There is not much we can't do if we put our minds to it, but that's not to say that being busy is the way. We also need to learn to slow down, drink in each moment and make the most of the gifts of the now. Whilst we have to 'do', we also need to 'be'. Through doing and being, we 'become' and create our 'belonging' as a family to create a home for our child or children. It's a magical calling to create and nurture our babies, but it is simultaneously the hardest, most demanding years of our lives when our babies are little and then running around learning about the world.

Becoming and being a mother is the most intense time where the learning curve is steep but the rewards are great with a lot at stake. Navigating this time is challenging as we have our body and mind transforming as our baby grows, is birthed and post-partum. Our body is our baby's everything for the first 9 months, then our body is still their everything for the next 3 months in the '4th trimester' and beyond. It's a lot of responsibility, but we (you) are made for this perfectly. Your mindset is one of the most important tools you have along with your support system consisting of the people/relationships that support you and the home and outside environments we live within.

I have created this site as a sister site to Babypeg.com which focusses on the pregnancy and first 2 baby years. This site has a different focus, you as a Mother, in all you do. Whilst it is tempting to run around all day, doing everything, constantly worrying if we have done this/need to do that/forgot this other important thing, that is not going to be a good use of your energy. We can instead work smarter, put our energy where it pays dividends, utilise the tools we have available to us, and get to the state of being called 'Thriving'. I'm going to gather here the best tips, best products, best resources you can use to not just get through, but to thrive through your hardest years. You never stop being a mother, so this website goes beyond those first 2 years that BabyPeg focusses on, and has something for Mothers at every stage.
